Pakistan Day

Riversdale held a Pakistan Day on 19th October 2010. All the different classes took part in activities about Pakistan.

Year 6 took part in experiencing how people felt in Pakistan and India when India was partitioned and Pakistan was created in 1947. They also did an activity where they picked traditional Asian sweets and then wrote an advert for it.

Lots of people, both children and staff, had a henna pattern painted on their hands, (for a 20p donation towards the flood relief fund) and everyone could wear Pakistani clothes or wear green and white if they wanted!

Exploring artifacts – from the Second World War

Click to play this Smilebox slideshow

Wandsworth Museum came into school to tell us about all the different things that happened in WW2. They asked us what we knew first. On the board they drew a mind map and we told them all the different things that we already knew.

There were lots of big boxes that they had brought, full of artifacts, (things that were from a long time ago). The first one we were shown looked like a mushroom. We asked lots of different questions to find out what it was – it was a darning mushroom! (Something that helps you to darn things like socks.)

After splitting into four groups we were given a box or bag that had different artifacts inside it. We then had to discover who the things belonged to, and why they had them. We were like detectives! There was lots of many different kinds of evidence to help us.

At the end we had to tell the rest of the class who our mystery person was, and present and talk about our evidence to the class. It was great fun, and we got to dress up as our character!

If you could have chosen who to be in the Second World War, who would you be, and why?

Looking for some great videos to watch, aimed at children? Check out these two great sites – Kideo Player,  (when you are watching them, just hit the space bar to skip to the next, or press the F to watch full screen) and the great Zuitube which claims to have the largest video collection for kids.

Smories

I came across this interesting website called….Smories.com – you can hear stories being read, and even submit your own stories to the site!

Kids love to be read to (check out Storyline Online ) In fact, it is good for kids to be read to. If a child is brought up being read to, they tend to develop a good imagination and even a desire to read themselves.

Without the rest of the details, you can go straight to Smories right now and begin to watch the videos of the stories being read. It’s easy because the front page contains thumbnails of a bunch of videos. As you hover your cursor over each thumbnail, you’ll see the information about each video, including the age-appropriate label.

What do you think of it?

One small planet

I like this widget you see below because it makes the world look a smaller place…….(click here to see it in action on our Radiowaves pages)……whenever you read the page where this spinning world is, a red dot appears on the spinning globe – see yourself….. and see where others have been before you.

It reminds me of our One Small Planet video, where you get a great glimpse of exactly where Riversdale is on the planet…..

Tell me – what part of this beautiful world do you inhabit?
